Why I Decided To Start Taking Care Of Me First

Warning, this is a transparent post. However, I wrote this in hopes that it helps someone. Being an interpreter or business owner period can be super crazy if you’re not taking care of yourself.

Have you ever felt depleted? Like there was no energy left and you just wanted to ball up and cry till you cried empty tears?

Girl. Let me tell you.

Being a wife, mother, soldier, and owner of multiple businesses will have you feeling like BLAH.

My blood pressure was up. I was snapping on the people that I love for no reason. I was even crying for no reason. I was slacking on my appearance, work, and business relationships.

That’s when I realized that something had to shake!

I had so much on my plate and for some crazy reason, I refused to delegate. I felt that if I just managed my time (no such thing) that everything could be done when I needed it to be done.

Wrong.

Just absolutely wrong.

I was losing sleep and I was losing ME.

I know that there will be times when you’ll have those nights when you don’t go to sleep in order to finish a project.

But not getting sleep continuously can be harmful to your health and will put you in the hospital.

What helped me was to have a routine in place in the evenings so you can get everything done and be in bed at a decent hour.

Read more about that here.

If you’re a blogger or any kind of writer, then sleep needs to become your best friend. You need to rest so that you can think to write and make important personal and business decisions.

Otherwise, I’m not so pleasant to be around and everyone around me suffers. My business and clientele do too.

Having healthy eating habits was another area of my life that I had to take control of. It is so easy to stuff your face while working intensely on a project. I have been “diagnosed” with hypertension since I was 21 years old. I have been managing my blood pressure via healthy eating for about 2 years now.

Here lately, I’ve “forgotten” about my duty to myself. Instead of scarfing down a bag of chips, I’ll eat dried cranberries. Instead of drinking soda for the caffeine, I’ll drink a cup of tea.

By the way, I have fallen in love with tea!

Raspberry, earl grey, and green tea are my favorite right now.

I had to get back in the groove of pampering myself. It doesn’t have to be the whole shebang of getting your nails, toes, and hair did. Sometimes it can be as simple as getting your eyebrows threaded, or some lightweight retail therapy. Anything that makes you feel and say “ahhh!” will do.

Lastly.

Just say NO. I don’t mean all the time. I mean when you KNOW you can’t do something but you say yes anyway. Then you end up getting mad at yourself.

Yep, that was me.

I never realized how much of a people pleaser I was! I was so afraid of hurting people and losing relationships that I jeopardized my HEALTH (and business…and therefore my clientele) by committing to things I knew I could not commit to,

People pleasing is the real deal. It’s BAD.

GET RID OF THAT “PEOPLE PLEASER” MENTALITY.

You will run yourself into the ground, and you won’t be able to deliver what you promised.

If you’re afraid of what the end result will be when you tell someone “NO”, then you need to reconsider your circle.

Just saying.

This not only applies to the crazy life of interpreters. This applies to anyone who is breathing.

Let me know what you do to take care of yourself when things get hectic.
